You Are Not the Center of the Universe
(And That’s a Good Thing)
You Are Not the Center of the Universe (And That’s a Good Thing)
I’m about to share an unpopular opinion—and it might just set you free.
You are not the center of the universe.
Hold on. Let me explain.
You work yourself up over soooo many things. The guy driving like a lunatic becomes your problem. The neighbor with zero kindness takes up your mental space. The music is too loud, people are too rude, brands don’t care about sustainability—on and on it goes.
Why have we made ourselves so important in the larger scheme of things?
Let’s Get Real for a Second
Would your anger change the way someone drives?
Would constantly complaining about someone make them change their ways?
Would trying to control people or situations make your life any greater?
Spoiler alert: It won’t.
What it will do, however, is shrink your world into a tight, stressed-out, highly limited environment. You become consumed by everything wrong with the world, leaving zero room for what’s possible.
Want More Space? Start with Less Control
The more I’ve been asking for space, the more I’ve had to stop obsessing over what’s happening outside of me. And the more I let the circus be a circus, the more my universe has become a peaceful haven.
I control what I allow to affect me.
And when I’m selective about who and what I give my precious attention to, I access more space, more ease, and more clarity
But What About ‘Caring’?
Now, some of you might say: But we should care about the world! We should fight for change!Of course. Caring is different from constantly reacting. You can take action from a place of peace and awareness rather than frustration and judgment. You can advocate without making yourself sick over things beyond your control.
A Practical Tool to Give Yourself More Space
Next time you want to knock down your neighbor’s house (figuratively, of course):
- Pause. Breathe. Before reacting, just take a breath.
- Repeat: “Not my circus, not my monkeys.” Seriously. Say it out loud.
- Remind yourself: If you get crazy about how crazy they are, that just makes two crazy people.
- Ask yourself: Can I actually control this?
- Then ask: Why do I want to control this
- Observe: How much power have you given them? And how little haveyou left for yourself?
